There is a lot of talk about finding your passion and your creativity at the moment, which makes both seem to be complicated things you couldn’t possibly figure out for yourself. In the age of life coaches, we are no longer encouraged to try things we haven’t tried before, follow our instincts, or take a leap of faith – without a coach standing along side us to give us encouragement and cheer us on.
I believe it is time for the return of common sense, for taking responsibility for ourselves, and for taking non-life threatening risks to find out just who we are. There is so much scaremongering on the news and online that our lives have become so much smaller than they were – and which has made us feel unsafe and uncertain. I also believe that everyone is creative, though creativity isn’t always defined by art – it can be great solutions to problems in any field – however, my specialization – and the focus of this site – is creativity through making things with your hands.
By trying these projects, I want you to get more comfortable about taking creative risks. Even if you haven’t picked up a pair of scissors or a marker in many years, I’d like you to suspend your negative internal chatter and simply try a project. if you don’t enjoy it, that’s OK – maybe the next project will appeal to you more. No one needs to know whether you binned the end result or placed it proudly on the wall – except you! Whenever possible, stick with the project if it starts to feel difficult, because that those moments that bring about interesting revelations and a growing feeling of success. The instructions are a guide, not a test that will be graded. If you discover a better way to do something, add it to the comment box below so we can all learn from your success!
You will slowly find yourself tackling projects you might have initially dismissed as being too difficult, and also that you are more creative and capable than you initially believed. In time I fully expect you to take some of the skills and ideas and merge them to create something completely original. This site is designed to be your training wheels to uncovering your creativity.
Please tackle these projects with inquisitiveness and an open mind. None of them are dangerous and all of them help you produce something for yourself, your home, or creates a gift to give. I really hope that as you get into this, you will start to find a direction – or two – that really resonate with you. Maybe it is your new passion? Maybe it will encourage you to take classes to learn more about an art or a craft. Whatever the end result, I hope you get pleasure from these projects. Dive in and start creating!
I’ll leave you with the words of Dr. Maya Angelou, “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” So go and find a project and start using your creativity.
